ok welll yesterday i put my heaterto 76 F and went to school i came back from school and noticed my water was at 80 i then lowered my heater to 72 and the water is at 79 is my heater the problem or is it the thernometer both are about 5 years old, its those stick on thernometers by hagen

I would get a new thermometer first. I would get one that it more precise. They have digital ones really cheap now for under 10 bucks. It could also be your heater too. I would act quickly when it comes to heater problems.

my water always gets warmer than the number on the heater so I always keep the heater a couple degrees lower than what I want it so if you want 76 keep it on like 72-74... you have to factor in the heat in your house also...

A lot of heaters have a range that might swing 4 degrees +/-. Make sure there is some consistency to the heater and you should be OK. I would definitely look into getting a quality thermometer as well.
