Hi all,

Arrived home from work to fin 6 of my tiger barbs and my new snowball plec dead. Also, two more tiger barbs are unwell. Water checks out, tested with two different kits to be sure of readings and all above board. There have been recent changes to the tank, I planted it yesturday morning. The fish have been in the tank for a few weeks before I planted it. I am useing an undergravel fertillizer and the tank was completely cycled. Strangely, none of my 8 corys were affected and the remaining 7 tiger barbs and red tailed shark appear to be fine. I have no Idea what is going on here, temperature is steady 25 celsius so if anyone out there has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,

Jay

If you are sure about the tank being fully cycled and all the water parameters are good
I would suspect the fertilizer possibly contaminated or overdose. Another thought would be did you rinse the plants before introducing them to the tank maybe they were dipped in some sort of pesticide to kill snails and such at the LFS or their supplier

Parameters are as follows:

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 25ppm
Ph 7.2 stable
Temp 25 degrees celsius
Im thinking the new snowball may have been carrying something that raced through the rest or might the plants have been sprayed?
Lfs is reputable and all the plants were in pots on display in tanks when I bought them, however, I did not rinse them down before planting. The fert is the good stuff from Tetra but its my first time useung it, though I followed all instructions to the letter...

Just in case it is a chemical issue I would do a couple of water 50% changes over the next few days and run a lot of good quality carbon for a while.
How big is the tank and what is your filtration ?

ditto

Hey guys,
Thinking this might be a lack of oxygen senario. Yesturday after planting I removed the internal filter that I was using to supplement the external. I then put the media from the internal into the external. The internal created alot of agitation and bubbles in the water and Im yet to install an airline as have not been home. Dammit, this happened fast. Anyhow, the tank is a 125ltr filtered by a fluval 205. After doing some bid water changes and installing an airline, in under an hour everything in the tank was back to normal. The tiger barbs were back fighting amongst themselves and it explaines why none of the corys suffered the fate of the fish that I lost. Am running with carbon to be sure but looks like im out of the woods here. However, is it possible that the lack of 02 (if thats what it was) could have affected the bacteria in the filter?

I would still lean towards a chem issue the fact that big water changes made the improvement. you still had plenty of circulation with the fluval plus the plants would have been adding some 02 also
But whatever the problem was Glad to hear its clearing up
