So here is an update and progress of my 5" Xantos from the time I got it to now. This will give you an idea of the color transition that a Xantos can go through. I believe that the GOLD COLOR comes from the Xanto being happy in it's environment; Proper hiding places, Good water Quality, well fed, low to medium light, and possibly being around other plecos. Well those are the conditions of my tank anyways. I have lots of driftwood in my tank but what I notice is that it likes to be on the floor under the wood and not on the wood.

Tank: Standard 75gal
My Filtration: FX5, XP3, 25W AQUA UV
Water Change: 50% once a week
Food: Hikari wafers, Hikari Sinking Excel, NLS Thera A

Pics are of same Xanto:

Very cool pleco! So their "stability" is similar to a dat? Interesting

Awesome!

Nice!
Full tank shot please :)

wow he looks great. The progression is very interesting. I was under the impression once they start getting dark again they don't go back to gold color

Thank you everybody for taking the time to leave a nice reply.

If you come home to a 2% gold xantos, it wasn't me that switched it out.......

After I'm done with your Xanto we won't know which one is yours! lol

Nice!
Full tank shot please :)

I never bothered to get a full shot of the 75gal cuz it's a small tank and all you see is wood. lol. but yea I'll take one and post later.

I think if they were able to turn gold but then turn dark , they still have the ability to turn gold again. Something caused the xanto to turn dark. The hard part is figuring what that is. If you don't know, than just do everything your suppose to...to make the pleco happy. With my scenario, i think it took my xantos a while to get comfortable. Either that or the only different thing I did before he turned full gold was i introduced a 7" BEP and started feeding it more hikari wafers where as b4 I fed it mostly NLS Thera A and Hikari Sinking Excel.
