It's not a true gar i.e. a Lepisosteid; it's a needlefish i.e. a Belonid...

Half an inch to an inch for the next year or so, if your lucky, is your answer. They tend to max out in the 8 to 10 inch range in captivity.

Well Alex.. I know you will actually move the post out of Gars (something rarely done before) so I will actually just add some input rather than dwell on the it's not a Gar aspect. Really these fish are very interesting animals and worthy of quality attention. I have worked with them for many years and really like them for what they are, but what they are is not a Gar so it best to handle them away from that area.
To the OP: I'm unlikely to look at this again as My primary focus is Lepisosteids and I do not dwell far from there. However, if you would like some specific info on the fish and their husbandry please feel free to PM me and I can help you out with these fish. They are not the easiest fish to care for and having all the information you can gather would be a wise thing to do. Just be aware that there is a lot of junk info out there so be careful and cross reference a lot.
