Xenon light assembly from home depot.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 55 with 6 xenon 'puck' lights, designed for under-counter lighting. It came with a 3 stage dimmer, if thats the kit you're talking about. It was about $35, but I can't remember if I got it from home depot or lowes.

I like the light it produces. The plants (anacharis) seem to thrive under the light, and it seems pretty natural to me.

It does build up a fair amount of heat. My canopy is 12" high and vented, so it doesn't effect the water all that much, but even if you had an 8 or so inch canopy I don't think it would add more than 1 or 2 degrees.

I did build my canopy. Its not by any means the best build around here, but I learned a ton, and am fairly happy with the way it came out.

There are pics in my gallery of the canopoy and of the tank with lights on. I haven't gotten set up to do any good photos yet, just crazy busy with the upcoming move, but there are a couple snaps of the whole thing and of the tank with lights on.

if i go the Xenon lighting route, is this a safe and also a natural light producing set-up? is the heat more substantial compared t LED?

Safe and natural looking to me. I put a dimmer to control the lighting.
Excellent shimmer effects, even at lower light settings.
Reflectors and bulbs protected by glass lens is a nice touch.
Must have decent properties for plants as it turned my brown algae green.
Yes, they do get hotter than a fluorescent, by quite a bit.
LED give off little to no heat, so they would be hotter than an LED string.
