Fishing in Wisconsin
I'm just curious what people keep there orange pikes with. I have one that is about 2.5-3" long. He has been kept solo as a little guy, but I want to get him used to living with others. I have heard that they are "mean". Please share your personal experiences with them. Right now I've put him in with a 2" male convict and a 2.5" jaguar cichlid. I'm using them somewhat as dithers so he gets used to living with tank mates. After one day they've seemed to get along pretty well. All of them ate the first day in the new tank.

My question is can they live in community tanks when they get larger, as long as the other fish are relatively aggressive?

Thanks.

Sorry if this seems like a repeat thread, I just found the other one about Orange Pikes, but this thread is valid because he already has fish mixed with his and I am planning for the future. The fish that are with mine are temporary at best.

That, and I only searched Xingu I instead of Orange Pike during my search...

dont have an orange pike myself but have 2 others. ive found the pikes tend to hide in caves more when they are by themselves and fully grown so other tankmates are good. the convict and jag are alright for not but could be trouble when they are larger. if the convict is female its gonna top out at about 3 inches which could make it a meal when the pike is full grown. my experience with jags is that they are the super mean ones. my jag scared my two johannas into the left 6 inches of the tank and they never moved from there until i seperated them. possibly consider other cichlids, maybe jds or firemouths. and silver dollars are also great.

on the future adding of fish. i think its easiest to mix other fish in with your pike while its younger. i think they are alittle more accepting and not as likely to just beat the crap out of whatever enters the tank. altho i had luck mixing firemouths and tinfoil barbs that were much smaller than my 12" lacustris. so u shouldnt have any trouble mixing in others.

Thank you, I really appreciate the reply. This morning when I checked on them, the pike has his little rock cave, the con is on the right end of the tank, somewhat hiding, and the jag is up under the filter hiding for dear life. I'm a little surprised since I thought the Jag's size would make him a little more aggressive.

The con is a male btw, these are both fish that were left over from my jag and con spawns over the summer, most of their siblings were fed to my gars and pbass.

Well i so wish Peanut was here he is dearly missed. You already answered your question. I have to address this issue with all my Pike's. It's always a revolving situation if your keeping multiple cichlids period. My Johanna is my most aggressive and just a beast in general. My Xingu I is not a good match for her and it has not worked at all. On the other hand my Xingu I dominates the tank she is in but it is the biggest fish in the tank. I think it is a male. I had to mave my Cobra from out of the tank with her this morning, so if that gives you any kind of idea of what your going to be dealing with I would get a couple of tanks just in case. ;) G/L. Oh yea and all Creni's that I mentioned above get along with the Lucius but they don't get as big.

I do agree with Obssesion. My theroy is the are aggressive motivated. Meaning as long as the other cichild and they have an understanding then it's nothing. As in introduction this is your highest point of aggression so if the pike is already trying to establish dominance in the tank then any new cichlids are considered food. Just like most Cichlids. And yes my Jaguar Managuensis run my tank and always have taken then lead.

Thank you. What happened to P_P?

I think that my ultimate goal is to get this pike into one of my big community tanks. But for now he is too small and the pbass would slurp him like spaghetti. That being said, if it's just a flat out bad idea I won't do it. My sveni did fine in that tank with the pbass and other fish and grew up to 10" when he mysteriously died. The sveni also grew up with the pbass and synspilium tho.

I have a pair - 14" male 10" female. I can barely keep them with each other. They mistook a 8" red Petenia for a feeder... and the Petenia was already established when they were introduced.

I'm sure with a larger tank (this one is 5' 100 gallon) they would mix well with larger CA's/SA's.

I had 3 juvies back in the spring and they were fine with about everything., liked to hammer on each other but otherwise fine.
