So my xingu paired up and started spawning about a week and a half ago. They were in a 450 gallon with very high flow rate. Yeaterday i finally moved the pair into a 300 as i was worried about the other bass in the original tank that i am currently trying to sell. Question that i have is about flow rate. I have noticed that they are now alot more lethargic this morning. I know that i just moved them but i have never noticed my fish just sit on the sand. I added a powerhead into the tank and they almost immediately started acting as they usually do. Problem is my only powerhead i have right now is like 1000 gallons per hour and im worried that the current might be too strong for spawning. I never bred pbass so any advice is appreciated . Do i buy a smaller powerhead and see if they go lethargic again? I was even thinking of using the 1000 gph to feed a mini gravitysump and have the watet just shoot straight down so theres flow but not crazy side to side action. Or are they fine in high flow?

I know im probly just over reacting but i spent a good 4 hours yesterday playing fish musical chairs between a 450 a 240 and 300 and i just wanna make sure they are set up right... for all i know they might have already laid eggs in the 450 but its in the large 1 to 2 inch stones i was using for substrate.

Give it time it’s only been a day right? They prob haven’t adjusted yet from being moved

Once they spawn your best bet is to pull the eggs out of the aquarium. The pair will most likely eat the eggs if not. You can use air line tubing to siphon the eggs into another aquarium. Once fertilized you should have wigglers in three days. You will need to have live baby brine shrimp for them once they become free swimming. You will also need to remove any fungus from non fertilie eggs or it will spread. Lots of water changes will be needed to keep the fry alive.

Water changes is not an issue ...if they did lay eggs before the move...will they try again soon or do xingu only try to breed like once a year?

It's depends on the pair. My fish spawned in my 220 with other Cichla in there a few times, after I moved them all over to the 450 it took them a few months before they did it again. Now they spawn pretty much once a month.

If they did it before, they will do it again. Just make sure you have a ten gallon with a sponge filter and a baby brine shrimp eggs to setup when they spawn again. They will need to start eating at least 3 times a day just before their egg sac gets absorbed. It's a lot of work for the first few months but rewarding, best of luck. Take a look at my thread I took pictures and posted them of the process.

Will do...thank u so much. I have bred alot in fish b4 so thats bit new...just with cichla im a newbie
