For a 125 gallon tank I have purchased two of these filters. There are two scenarios im looking at. A) Make 1 XP3 a pure biomedia filter and make the other a pure mechanical filter or B) Make both canisters biofilters with a layer of regular top filter and an HOB (AC110 most likely) packed with mechanical filtration.

Thoughts please? Other ideas?

I'm not a fan of making a filter bio or mechanical only..only because if something should happen to the bio media when you are cleaning the bio only filter you don't have a backup....I would put bio in both or get a third for mechanical only

I agree with vr6fan. A bio filter needs to have mechanical filtration before the bio media or else its going to get clogged and be less effective. Ps mechanical filtration then bio filtration.

I went ahead and picked up an aquaclear 110 with some extra foam inserts to pack it well. Got a few packs of stars for the XP-L's so should make for a decent set up.

Good idea. I run double sponges on my Aqua Clear 110. I use biomax mostly in my canisters.

Sounds like a plan. I run xpls with foam, micro then bio. I like all the mech before the bio because it tends to stay much cleaner.
