i need to get some by this weekend so i can start cycling my tank. it came with everything i need, except the stars. is there anything else i can use? maybe something i have in my home? or something a little cheeper? or are stars just the best way to go?

you are better off staying with biostars/biomax or others of the kind they are a little more expensive but offer a lot more surface area than pot scrubbies or bioballs and since there isnt that much space in a canister there is not that much of a choice...

fluval biomax-500gram 6.95$
biostars-20 pack 9.95$
enheim EHFI substrat filter media/ 1 liter 18.95$
2 liter 31.95$
EHFI substrat PRO filter media/ 1 liter 24.95$
2 liter 41.45$
you can expect prices around these

my lfs sells the nanocube ceramic rings for $4.99/container and i only needed one box for my xp2. the one box filled half a container inside the xp2

Just get pot scrubbies from the dollar store it will be MUCH cheaper!

^pot scrubbies do not work as well because they offer a fraction of the surface area
they work well in wetdry because you have more space but in canisters thee space is very limited so unless you have a very very low bioload only cannister type media will cut it

no reason u can't use them...they stars or whatever u were going to use only provide a fraction of the surface area of the sand and decore in u'r tank anyway...it's more suplemental as the water goes over the bacteria way too fast for it to make much of a difference. gl and save some cash when ya can...this hobby will destroy you otherwise

i know that i want as much filtration as possible for my cichlids, but the xP3 comes with a nozzel and a spray bar to dispense filtered water INTO the tank. which should i use? i also have a powerhead that will be in the tank.
