Looking into canisters for a 75g freshwater tank. Found both the XP3 and Eheim 2217 for the same price, $137 @ Ken's. The Magnum 350 Pro is $106. Opinions on which to use?

Also, can I get away with only using 1 filter, the canister? Thanks. :-)

i wouldn't suggest using only one filter. there's always the chance the filter might fail and your inhabitants of the tank would be without filtration. i'd say go with either the rena or eheim. they're a lot better for bio filtration while the mag is more suited for mechanical.

Though the XP3 and the 2217 are the same price initially, you will need to spend another 25 bucks on media to make the rena worth using.

IMHO the 2217 is a great filter but IMHO not enough to handle both the bio and mechanical duties of a moderately stocked 75g tank. I recommend another filter to do mechanical duties and let this one handle the bio side... you will not be disappointed...

Would the ac110 be a good 2nd filter?
Yes so would 2 AC70's... which i feel would be the best bang for the $$ in the long run...

You can set up 1 AC70 for mechanical filtration, 2 sponges sandwiched with floss in the middle wash the bottom sponge under the sink and move the top sponge to the bottom and replace the floss in the middle with new and put the washed sponge on top, and the other filter do the same or keep it stock with the sponge, carbon, ammo chips, peat, shells, ect....

1 AC110 draws 14watts filters 500GPH
2 AC70's draw 12watts or 6watts each and together filters 600GPH or 300GPH each

wow. that makes a lot of sense...i've been buying ac110s all the time meanwhile i could've just bought ac70s...

Leptar, sorry for asking a dumb question (I'm new to this) but are you saying use 2 ac70's in addtion to the canister? Or that 2 ac70's are sufficient alone? Tx :-)

"In addition too...."

I myself am learning daily regarding filtration...
It is better to have then to have not.. So if you can fit the 2 AC70's along with the canister then do it, if not then shoot for 1 AC70 now and wait to see if that will suffice for your need.
