well i just ordered a rena xp3 for my 120 (i will be running more filtration) and i was wondering what would be the best filter media for some decent size cichlid

I have 2 xp3s on my 75.... the first one has bottom tray sponges, next 2 baskets have eheim substrat pro..2nd filter has bottom tray of sponges, and the next 2 baskets have filter floss. the great thing about renas is you can actually have 6 smaller baskets by using the basket dividers and then you have more possibilities. great filter good luck with it!

I runt he black sponges in the bottom tray and ceramic media or pot scrubbers in the others.

I also have the black sponges on the bottom and the scrubbers in the middle and floss on top. Just saying thats the way I have done it, this time. Opps, I don't have the 3 though I have the 4.

Long story short...........I ended up filling all three levels with crushed coral..........Crushed coral makes a good biological media.....The tank is 125g.............For mechanical filtration, I use 2 AC101's...............

bottom tray i got black sponges and the rest with ceramic rings and floss on very top............goodluck,,its a great filter!

For mine I use ceramic rings, and floss. Also one basket has sponges from the dollar store.

Black sponges in the bottom
Seachem Matrix in all of the rest
Run the polishing pad on top if you want
It increases maintenance intervals but works well

I have (2) xp3's on my 150, (1) xp3 on my 55. I just use the course sponges on the bottom basket, fine sponges in the middle and charcoal and filtration blanket on top.l
