Do you guys think an XP3 full with pot scrubbies is ok? Or should I really really need bio-media in it. I still have a bag of ehfisubstrat which i'll throw in there.

That would be a waste of canister space. Bushy plastic plants in your tank would support nearly the same amount of aerobic bacteria. I would suggest "thick" bio-media that would support a bit of anaerobic bacteria (nitrate reduction) in addition to aerobic bacteria. I consider Matrix, Cell-Pore, etc. thick bio-media

Nylon scrubbers are a waste of space in canisters.

Why? Seeem to work great in mine :D

You cannot support nearly as much with scrubbies as bio-media. Ehfisubstrat pro for instance has a surface area of 18,300 sq. ft. per US gallon. Nylon scrubbies have 370 sq. ft. per US gallon.

Ok, I understand that, but, I filled my canister for about $10. And my tank is overstocked, but, my water readings are always perfect :D When I get the money, I'll give Ehfisubstrat pro a try :)

My XP3 has sponges, biomax, and scrubbies and works flawlessly.

Keep in mind that your bacteria and ammonia levels are proportional

Also keep in mine you can have an over-stocked tank with NO filter; as long as you are willing to change your water every few hours.
