I bought it used and ran it for about 4 hours w/ no problems except noise. i fixed the noise by taking out the impeller and putting it back in. ran it throughout the night, woke up and found water on the floor.

the leak seemed like it came out of the two side handle areas.

i didn't have much time to see what the problem was since i had to go to work. what do you guys think is the problem?

I hope you turned it off before leaving:eek:

Not sure what your problem is. With my Fluval 404's, they are placed in a rubbermaid tub 'just in case'. They will catch the first couple gallons of any leak.

Not sure how the xp3 is constructed, but on the Fluval there is a rubber o-ring that seals the motor unit to the canister. When I open the valve after cleaning, I turn everything off in the area so I can hear. Sometimes I'll hear air escaping from the canister. When that happens, I close the valve, remove the motor unit, spin the o-ring 90 degrees and try again.

I had my xp3 from where the power cord enters the motor housing, Im not entirely sure how it happened but I think it got too full. Now whenever I service the xp3 I dump out all the water in the motor part before I reconnect the hoses, havent had a problem since.

If it is leaking out the handles and where the cord enters the head. Then the quick disconnect valve assembly was not seated properly. This could be caused by the assembly being broken or the two small o rings on the inlet/outlet pipes could be bad.

The water leaks from where the o rings are and fills the entire head of the canister, eventually it will come out from where the cord enters or if it leaks rapidly it comes out the handles.

i think you got the exact diagnosis, i should call you Doctor ;)

i noticed the head of the canister did fill up w/ water and now i know its caused by the 2 small o rings on the in/out tubes. so is that the only way water can enter the head of the canister, through the 2 in/out o rings?

Well assuming there is no large crack in the head somewhere the o rings are likely case. I pull mine off every once and a while and lube them with vegitable oil. Check to see if damaged or if they have an irregular shape. When you insert the quick disconnect assembly push down on it while working the lever, this will help seat it.

BTW the suggestion of a rubbermaid container is always a good idea. One other question you don't have your canister place some abnormal distance below your tank do you? The recommended maximum distance below water line is 55" more could cause leaking because of to much water pressure. I have experienced this problem, though not with a XP3 but an Eheim 2026
