Ok i have a 75 gallon african cichlid tank with a fluval 305 and an AC110...I was given a rena XP3.....I want one HOB and one canister so should I keep the 305 and get rid of the xp3 or ditch the 305 and use the xp3? the xp3 is for up to 170 gallons and the fluval is only 70 but they are close in price...what gives?

fluvals are a bit overpriced IMO. the The xp3 holds more media and has more flow. You might as well use the XP3, the only drawback is it uses 28 watts vs 12 for the fluval
Also, don't worry about what the manufacturers say is the tank size filtration capacity. If you compare a fluval 405 and an xp3, the media volume and flow rate is very similar, bur the xp3 is supposedly good for up to 175 gallons and the 405 only for 100 gallons.
