On my xp3 and xp4 i have 3 Filtration Baskets inside that they gave me a handful of Bio-Chem stars. What im asking is can i fill the 3 baskets with AquaClear BioMax? Can i just cut open the bags and pour it in? How much extra room should i give for water flow?

Bio media can be used in any filter really. Manufacturers just put there name on it so ppl buy it for that particular filter. Yes you can do that.

I have done the same thing. Opened the bag and filled the trays.

Ok, GOOD. My minds eye says this would do nothing but good things for my reds. I wonder how much i would need to fill xp3 and an xp4... lol. I never should need to replace these right?

Last question. If my water is all at zero, in theory can i add another fish? What would get along with reds? Piranha wise.

all at zero? you should have some nitrate, how long has your tank been set up??

Fill the trays all the way, bio is the most important stage in filtration

I think i had slightly on the stress side. Tank has been setup since early june. It has been at 8+ppm for to long. Never bothered my fish. Thought it was odd for it to drop to zero. I checked at work after i fed some catfish and unshelled shrimp and it was at 1, but WAY better. Not sure if i want to use the xp4 on my 120 filled with the bio stuff or use it on my 55.

Hell yes it is, people dont get it. I got some AC110 stuff im going to cut open the bags and pour it in.

Also, i got some PH 7.0 by API, poured 12 cups in to TRY to adjust my PH. It says having hard water will make it really hard to do. The test kits show 300+ on hardness. Did i waist my time?

What are you referring to when you say 8+ppm? Ammonia? If your ammonia was that high, you must have a really acidic ph, or else nothing would live in that...

Don't mess with your ph unless you REALLY need to... like trying to spawn SA cichlids or something. Most fish will adjust just fine to your ph. And don't use the API stuff. Are you trying to raise or lower your ph? Why?

Oh, and bio media is great, but don't neglect your mech sponges completely. Plenty of space for bacteria on sponges. Sponge filters are also your friend for adding extra bio filtration...
