I would like to find out what you guys are feeding your rays that are 18"+. I am finding it more and more expensive trying to fill them up on market shrimp, they eat about 1lb. a day and with shrimp costing $5.99 lb it is kicking my @ss. As much money I spend alone on shrimp a month is CRAZY!

I would like to find alternatives in feeding my larger rays and catfish. What type of large type of fish or animal can I find at the market that's not so dam expensive. Something thats not so oily, I tried catfish fillet, anchovies and mackerral and it was wayyy to oily. The last time I was at the local Asian market they had all kinds of fish and aquatic animals, and instead of wasting 2 hours in the market looking at all the choices they had and trying to decide, I thought maybe someone can help me out here.

Any suggestions are well appreciated

also, a ray that size shouldnt need to feed every day. If your are breeding them then I would feed lots, but rays that size just eat too much otherwise. When my old motoros were getting 12" or so apiece I feed every other day, they still grew rapidly and were very active

Smelt & shrimp.

You can buy them in bulk packaging from your local restaurant supply store. In Michigan, I get 11 lb. boxes of smelt and shrimp for about $29. Less than $3/lb.

That makes the 1 lb/day a little easier to handle. You can also buy large quantities of whold shrimp from shrimp farms. They will sell you the "seconds" at a great price. The downside is that you need a way to store 30 - 50 lbs.

You could also start a worm farm to supplement their diet. There is not much up front investment and in time, it can provide a decent number of worms per day. I know a guy that breeds crayfish in a water trough that is attached to his gutter downspout.

There are lots of options.

Thanks everyone for all the advice.

It would be great to get the information to shrimp farm to contact them for about 50-100lbs. of shrimp. I have an extra deep freezer I could put the shrimp in.

As for the worm thing I did try that and I found myself running out of worms WAYYY too fast... The crayfish thing sounds like a plan though too. I will try that as soon as crawfish come back in season around here( May through August) I am also going to try Octopus, Squid and Mussels. I have never tried it before so we will see if they like it.

I will definitely give all these options a try.

Thanks again everyone :D

Try stuffing shrimp with pellet's! :D
