I woke up this morning to find my pair of Yellow Acara had spawned again. This is the third spawn for the pair living in my 180 gallon SA community; the first two spawns unfortunately did not result in fry. I initially assumed one of the several plecos had feasted on the eggs during the night, but this was not the case. After the second spawn I watched both the male and female acara eat the eggs one by one, in between protecting the spawn site from the other fish. Hopefully they'll get it right this time although I have my doubts. They are still pretty young, and the male has been dumping sand on the eggs for some reason.

Both fish remain in breeding dress 100% of the time which is pretty fantastic. The markings on both fish are the same, although they differ in color. The female has a darker blue/gray color base while the male takes on a stronger metallic yellow/silver base color. The blue markings on the face are electric.

I had seen the male and female both preparing a rock for several days prior. The sand was excavated from around the rock, and the face of the stone was vigorously cleaned for hours. Every spawn thus far has been induced by a water change. They seem to spawn either at night or very early in the morning.

The female has been more apt to fan the eggs while the male has played the part of border patrol. They switch roles at times

This is 1 of 2 separate pairs that had formed out of 6 juveniles purchased from Rapps in July of this year. The fish were 1.5" - 2" long when purchased. The female in the below pics is roughly 3.25", and the male is roughly 4". They are both big eaters and I would expect to see another inch of growth on each fish.

Anyways....on to the pics. Trust me when I say that they are even more stunning in real life :WHOA:
