Just got a few Yellow Pigeon Discus. I’ve heard that the yellow coloring sometimes turns orange as they get older because of the food they eat. Is there any foods I can give my Discus to keep their yellow coloring?

Add egg yolk, yellow snap peas, and yellow peppers to Beefheart, and avoid red enhancers.

Thanks. Is there any flakes of other foods the you can buy commercially? I’m sure it has to have certain ingredients in it. I know there’s a lot out there that help with the Red coloring.

Not too sure about beef heart, but then again I don't keep discus. I usually stick to high quality pellets, like nls, as a staple.

If you have time and money I would use this recipe

  • 3 cups of ground beef heart. (Remove the blood vessels and fat)
  • 4 tablespoons of yellow cornmeal or cooked wheat germ.
  • 1 cup ground raw shrimp (without the shell).
  • 3 tablespoons of ground garlic.
  • ½ cup cooked spinach puree.
  • Yolk of 3 eggs.
  • 6 crushed calcium citrate and Vitamin D supplements.
  • 4 multivitamins (washed and soaked in water to form a soup).
  • 2 cups of meat lover’s flakes and 1 cup discus and angel flake.
  • 2 ounces of Formula One Marine
  • 7 small boxes of unflavored gelatin.

Beef heart is NO LONGER used as a discus food by most. It gives a good boost but shortens the lifespan. Look into good frozen foods such as benkers discus mix, and or a good staple pellet.

A well bred discus should keep it's colours..

So you’re saying it doesn’t matter what food I give my Yellow Discus? If they’re quality fish, from a quality breeder, they will keep their color?

Brine shrimp will be good for yellow, but yes well bred fish will hold their colours.
