Im not sure if i posted this in the correct section or not but....

two of my tanks have a yellow-ish tint to them. When i set up my 100g i used sand on the bottom and for the last few months have thought that this was causing the discoloration. But i have recently set up a 75g that has the same issue with the water color. the only consistancy between the two tanks are the filters that i bought pre-owned, with media etc. already in them. Is there a certain type of filter media that might tint the water a yellow color?

I know it is not an issue with the water itself because out of 7 tanks only 2 have this issue, and they all get water changes the exact same way around the same time.

thanks
Josh

did you put new driftwood in the recently set up tanks?

filter media should not be capable of tinting your water color

Any chance it could be the type of light bulb you are using? Some make the water appear yellowish.

no, i don't think so. I took the light for the 75g out of a two light set up i had on my 55g. The 55g is perfectly clear, but the 75 and the 100 appear yellow.

could the use of carbon be the difference? i am using carbon on the other filters but i don't think there is any carbon in the 100g filter (fx5) and the 75 filter (xp3). all i see in those is bio rings, foam, and sacks full of ????, they kind of look like kacky sacks.

I don't know what could be in there. Maybe peat? Open one up & see what's in there next time you clean the filter.
