I have a yellow lab African cichlid I believe is holding eggs. People say to seperate her or to strip the eggs at the proper time.

I would like to keep the babies...and if they do stay in my main tank several will be eaten.

(1) Should I seperate her?
(2) At what point do I do this?

Thanks in advance...

You have a little time if she just started holding. I prefer to remove holding females right away and put them in a twenty gallon tank that has a couple hiding places and let her be by herself. She won't eat until she spits her fry so the less stress and moving around she does the better. She will recover more quickly this way.

Once she has been holding for about three weeks, start adding frozen brine nauplia with a pipet into her cave. She will suck them up for her wigglers that are still in he buchal cavity. Once she spits, offer her flake food for three or four days as she guards her young. This will help build up her strength before you put her back in your main tank. The fry should be fed at least three times a day and will grow rapidly.

I have a 39 gallon with 10 fry from a another fish all are extremely small still. Can I put in there as I don't really have means to put her alone.

Thank you in advance...also I believe she has only been holding a couple days...

get yourself a divider. they're about $10 or you could make your own. they make things alot easier. then there's no need to move fish around and stress them

Make a fry saver out of ice cream container, fly screen and polystyrene.
Catch her as soon as possible and leave her in there until she releases them. Put a terracotta pot in there so she can feel safe.

Hold for 3-4 weeks.
