Yellow labridens

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 1 4-5" male and he shares a 190 with various riverine central americans like P. Gibbiceps, Bulleri, Nebuliferum just fine. They are very bloat sensitive though so be sure to keep them on a lower protein diet when smaller. Very clean water is essential. Not for the beginner and tough to keep even for advanced hobbyists but a very beautiful fish.

yeah i'd have said 8-10" on average. personally I wouldn't keep them with other cichlids because their rarity will drive their price up so I wouldn't take even the smallest chance that another more aggressive cichlid might beat on them.

If I were going to keep them I'd do them in a 55 or 75 gallon (75 or larger preferably) with some swordtails or platys and maybe a bristlenose plec. :)

definitely should be treasured!... they are like rocking horse s**t in the u.k.... incredibly hard to get hold of... a bonded pair were recently put up for sale on a uk forum for 150 pounds sterling.. (although the vendor has a track record for ripping people off!!)
just ordered a group from conkel via oodballexpress, fingers crossed they arrive safe and sound... beautiful fish, and as with the other hericthys absolutely belting when in breeding colouration...

Careful who you get these from. There is only one or two sources I know of that have truly pure labs. There may be more, but I don't know of them. I doubt all others and think they could be selling hybrids. The hybridization of these fish in the wild (as the carpintis make their way up the farming canals, etc.) is making the acquisition of pure specimens very difficult.

Don't ask me about the "pure" source as I don't want to start another vendor war. Just do a little research.

Norcali gave some good advice in this thread about care, etc. Also, you may want to look for some pics of Mo's fish. I know his are pure specimens.

We just had Rusty speak at our club here in Winnipeg yesterday. What an eye opener on what is going on in MX with fish and habitat! He brought a few of the yellows for our auction. . . I know where they ended up, great home! Rusty's advice was to keep em warm (low 80's) and don't over feed.

Rusty is one of the few sources of pure yellow labridens...that's where the vendor that cchhcc was referring to gets them from.

I had pleasure to see the wild juveniles he collected in his fish room before they started breeding. stunning fish...he offered me some for $25 each but I didn't have that much on me at the time.

:)
