I've found two different "minimum" tank sizes for yellow labs: 29 gallons and 55 gallons. Assuming I'd get at most 4 labs to hopefully end up with at least 1 male and 2 females, what size minimum could I get by with?

And by get by with, I mean that the fish would be happy, healthy, unstunted, and breeding when of age. I'm not looking for the stunted oscar in the 10 gallon comparison.

I had about 5 africans in a 29 for a long time. It worked out great nobody fought and everybody grew alot. The fish were all different sizes from 1-5". I think you could get 4 in a 29. They say 12 in a 55 gal so I think it would be plenty.

Yes 29gal should be fine for four. I kept 5 in a thirty full gorwn with no problems =) If you get anymore then 5 then I would suggest a 55gal.

ive got 4 africans in a 29 gallon and theyre all doing fine

Yep they should be fine in a 29 untill they decide to spawn and then you will need a second tank for them and a third for the fry.

Would a 20 gallon work for a few months for three juvie yellow labs? Water changes would be 50% three times a week.

it should be, maybe have a few extra hiding places so that the can "get away" from one another if need be.

Once or twice a week would be fine.
