I am planning on doing a stingray tank yellow stingrays to be exact. I wanted to open the thread and see what people could tell me about tank mate's. Minimum size of the tank and any other experiences.
My tank size I am looking at is 500gal 96x36x36 with a 200 gal sump for the filtering it self I have not planned that far. I have not had much experience with reef tank

Stick with Caribbean fish and make a Biotope. Porkfish, eels, groupers and lookdowns.

Obviously most of us are gonna recommend a bigger foot print like 96x48 but you dimensions could be ok if there is not much rock / free sand as thats where they are 85% of the time. The other 15% will be on the sides/top and they rarely swim open water (well at least my california rays don't). Mine have been voracious eaters and pretty easy to care for overall. Go with a finer substrate / sand so they can bury themselves without scratches. Lastly for filtration you need a serious setup due to the messy water/sand stirring constantly. You will want good flow rate (external pump), powerheads, sump and or bead filter ultima 2, big protein skimmer (double the rated size of your tank), heater, chiller, controller to keep it all in check and the rest just makes it easier like auto top off, ozone, grounding probes, purigen etc.

Buffers? You lost me there unless you just mean ph 8.3 buffer?

I have a 25-28" Horn shark, 16-18" Banded, school of mono argentus, school of green damsels, sailfin tang, foxface, lawnmower blenny, snails, crabs etc....Tank is 8ft x 6ft

Ask away though

i guess i am looking for the ruff cost on the chemicals and salt i know its a little bit of art and science in the saltwater game. by buffer i mean any thing the water treating needs

Oh well those costs are fixed pretty much with a FOWLR tank and just keep up with your water changes. The sand/crushed coral acts as a buffer as well.

I think you are thinking of a reef/coral tank then you do have chemicals and additives potentially. Still however with water changes you are constantly replenishing nutrients. Often times removing them as well.

I am actually interested where you can find yellow stingrays. I am in NY and my LFS who can usually get me anything, has had no luck in finding me a yellow stingray. Sorry if I am jacking your thread. I will be following your build when you move forward with it.
