Yellowed acrylic sheet

i still need to get the scrathes out of my tank, but i dunno if im even going to mess with it honestly. i wish it was clear but im just lazy. as far as being yellowed i would say u couldn't. u MIGHT sand a thin layer off the inside and outside of it and see if it works. but i would try it on a small part of it in the corner or something to see if that would even work.

haha yeah i know what u mean. im just lazy. but the deal i got on the tank. im starting to wonder if i should take this tank apart. get the scuffs out of the acrylic and build a plywood tank (or 2) with the acrylic. i'd like to have something wider. the height is great the length is fine. 6 ft long, 18" wide 24 3/4" tall. 1/2" thick acrylic. would like to make it about 3 ft wide or maybe 4 ft.

so i got 2 options, or well, 3 i guess

1. fix it and fill it up as is
2. make it 8 ft x 4 ft
3. sell it for 300ish and build a tank from scratch and order glass from glasscages instead of acrylic.

lemme know how that yellowing removing goes tho. if u dont mind me askin - how much was the acrylic? thats a big ass sheet and the thickness opens up a lot of possibilities

Whether you keep it or sell it, you'll find that you get the experience of buffing it out will provide you with the knowledge to do it again comfortably, you'll get a higher price for a biffed tank, and you might even enjoy the finished tank.

yeah i totally agree with that clay. i can enjoy it buffed or not. and the xp is always good to have. im just thinking a wider tank = bigger ]V[onsters

Can the yellow be rubbed out of a yellowed acrylic sheet? I've gotten the scratches out of 3 tanks, found 4'x8'x1" sheet at flea market but its yellowed. Any help would be great, thanks.

Tri-Fisher:

I have seen guys who install plexiglass windows, use a paste type car wax (i.e. RALLY CAR PASTE WAX - in a can) to take out the yellowing in 1/2" plexiglass windows, they have had to install. Now whether or not you can do this with 1 inch stuff and use it for a monster tank viewing window or not is still another matter, if that is what you plan to do with it.

Sanding it with some really fine grit sandpaper, may be a better way to remove the yellowing as it would not contaminate the plexiglass, like the Paste Car Wax might do, with it's cemical composition and all.

What ever you decide to do, though, I hope your dickering for the flea market buy works out for you. A real killer deal if you can get for $100.00 instead of the original asking price. Maybe you should call an acrylic fabricator close to you and see what a new sheet of 1 inch would go for. Then consider how much time and effort you'll have to put in, on the 4 x 8 sheet on the flea market bargain. Who knows, maybe you can talk them down to half of their asking price. It's worth a try. At any rate, good luck with the deal at the flea market.
