I JUST GOT A B.N. FX5 ON EBAY FOR 170$ THIS IS MY FIRST CANNISTER FILTER AND I NEED SOME HELP ON WHAT AND WHAT ORDER TO FILL IT ? ITS FOR MY 180 WITH A 16" MONO. 20" L.MARMORATUS, 10" ROYAL PLECO, 8" PIME. PANTENEIRO. THE TWO BIG GUYS DEF. TAKE SOME LARGE DUMPS.

i put prefilter and carbon in the top biomax in the middle and carbon ammonia and bioballs in the bottom with a polishing pad on the top of the bottom tray but u need to clean the polishing pads like once a week

I would put in a sponge then pack the rest with biomax. Carbon and Ammonia media is a waste IMO if your running enough Bio u wont have ammo and carbon does what? for your tank, except maybe remove tannins/meds.

There are sponges already, and no need for prefilter. Mostly bio, some filter floss for polishing (100% poly fill is cheap and disposable) and if you need it, some Purigen!

YET ANOTHER FX5 MEDIA Q.

I find this amusing.

If you know this is just another fx5 media question, why make a post about it?? Seriously, I lost count after 12 threads pretaining to the exact question. Search, search some more, then read, and read some more.

Gezz.

Do we really need to have a sticky about this? Why does everyone have trouble figuring out what to put in these filters? It performs the exact same tasks as almost all other aquarium filters out there. Mechanica, Chemical, Biological.

BTW, you can read the manual too.

Above post must have been extremely helpful.

I reccomend using only the half moon shaped foam and filling the rest with some sort of bio-media. WIth regular water changes and monthly filter rinses with tank water, you should be just fine. I ran an fx5 set up as described on a heavily stocked 210 for around 2 years with no problems. Nutrients were low and water clear.

Good Luck.

I would fill the bottom with sponges and the rest with eheim subsrat pro, forget the chemical media you have to take it out often. with this setup your good for 6 mo
