Please bear with me, I know these questions get old. I have used the calculators and tried to do my research. I am just starting a 96" x 30" x 34" tank (outside dimensions of the plywood box). I went to order a piece of glass 90" x 32". 1/2" (untempered) is $250.00. 3/4" is $810.00 ( I can only find one glass supplier out of four around here who can even get it). I had figured $600.00 or less would fit in my budget and was hoping to get it for that. If so I had planned to just use 3/4 to be on safe side. I am now back to looking at 1/2"

The tank will have 3 cross braces on top (stainless steel rods) at 2 ft intervals with a water depth of 30". I would much prefer to go with one continuous sheet of glass but would compromise with two windows and a center brace if I really have to.

I know if I ask for opinions I am probably going to get some who say 1/2 is OK and some who think it is a little risky (opinions are still welcome). My question is whether anyone here actually has a tank with a 1/2 inch continuous glass window this size and how well and for how long it has worked. Thanks.

I don't have a tank that big yet, but all my research into glass thickness tells me that 16mm - 5/8" will be sufficient for up to 96" length X 33" depth.

Ah, yes. I enjoyed you're thread a while ago. Outstanding tank you built. If mine turns out 1/2 as well as yours, I will be happy. I am also thinking of tempered but have not gotten a price yet, although I understand tempered, while it should resist water pressure a little better, also shatters easier if you hit it with something (or with a fishes nose). I don't think the fish I will have will be prone to breaking glass however, so it would maybe be a good compromise. Thanks Guiness. I will make a decsion in the next couple of days and just run with it I guess.

if you can keep your water level at 96x30x30 and not to 34 then you can go 1/2"
