3 weeks ago i got a trio of fish from an auction. the markings on the bag were smeared and the only readable part was "sp. Rio Tapajo." I originally thought it said Altifrons but someone in a different thread said it may be Latifrons. The fish are very thick bodied with long streaming fins and many speckles. Sorry for the terrible picture but they have been hiding and are hard to photograph.

Not a geo, wrong mouth shape.

Looks a lot like an acara, something's different though.

It does look like an "Aequindens" latifrons but they and the other blue acaras aren't found anywhere near the Rio Tapajos. Could be a new species if labeled correctly, and extend the natural range of the blue acara group.

The furthest east/south acara I found was Aequindens hoehnei which does have the silver lining along the dorsal fin, but doesn't have the blue acara facial pattern seen in the pic.

So would guess it was mislabeled if I were a betting man, but I'm not. As Modest Man said, if labeled right would be an undescribed species "Aequindens" sp. 'Rio Tapajos.'

Did you ever figure out exactly what fish they were? I know this thread is a couple weeks old. But I just got 4 exactly like it that were labeled Blue Acara (Aequidens pulcher). When someone on another board said they looked like Green Terrors (who were in a different tank at the store) I disagreed with him but then got to looking at Green Terrors and they do look similar. My 4 remind me of my Eartheater (Satanoperca leucosticta) with their sloped heads and sand-sifting but they're definitely not Eartheaters, they're real personable and not shy at all. Here's the pic I posted on the other board, they look just like the one posted in this thread. That's why I was wondering if you'd ever found out what yours was, they sure look like Blue Acaras to me (unless mine were labeled wrong).

They're Aequidens sp. 'Gold Saums', indeed nothing like Eartheater's but they are very personable. Blue Acaras have different facial makings and good specimens will have strong barring through the body. The scale markings are completely different.

That's not a Green Terror or Blue Acara, not a Geo either, looks very much like a Acara type cichlid.

Judging by the scales alone I'd put decent money on them being juvenile Gold Saums, but I could be wrong of course, they do have very sloped heads.
