I'm thinking of using a kinda plant filter in my 135g when i get it running. i know its not going to be the only filter i just think it will look cool to have vines coming out of the top of the hood and watering plants w/ aquarium water. couple ?'s i was going to use PVC pipe w/ holes for draining (hoping for a rain type effect) being filled by the water out of a HOB. i'll probably just be using a few types of philodendron. i saw a type of hydroponic media called rockwool and was wondering if it is safe for aquariums and if it effects water condition. any ideas or tips would be great and i'll try to draw up some plans to post soon. oh and also any idea how to suspend this?

You can build hydroponic trays out of nylon rain gutter material and the wonder material...egg crate. You can put holes in the bottom to drip back into the tank for your rain effect and regulate the water flow with a ball valve.

I agree that it would make a very nice effect and would be a conversation piece but I'm afraid that the amount of plants needed to make any real differance in your water quality would be massive...
certianly a lot more than you can grow in a couple of tank top trays..

You'd actually be surprised at how few plants are needed to keep ammonia levels down. The biggest problem actually arises in the conditions that the plants are grown in. If the conditions are adequate, then the plants will not absorb the ammonia fast enough, but in proper conditions, tanks can be run without filters.

I stand corrected... Might be worth looking into in the future. Are there any vegtable plants that would be good for this?

yeah i still plan on running other HOB and probably a sponge filter. i have thought about a canister but the jury's still out. this would mainly be for fun and a unique tank

Considering becoming a fish farmer?

With the right light, space and system...

Leafy veggies..lettuce, watercress, herbs (the cooking kind)

Tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, grapes, strawberries.

Not a complete listing, just an idea how varied the spectrum can be.

Imagine being able to recycle some of your W/C water! And if not recycle at at least reuse.
