So I was randomly browsing CL and stumbled across an ad for African cichlids for sale. In the footnotes of the listing he also claimed to have a large JD for $12, but had no pictures of one. After multiple attempts to confirm the fish he was calling a JD was the large gold saum that was in the pictures I drove out and picked up this fine specimen. So is it a male/female (I'm thinking male) and is it just me or is its belly a little sunken in?

By the way it is close to 8" nose to tail. Thanks for any input.

looks like a super super sexy female. Sexiest female GT I've ever seen because it looks nicer than a lot of males in a male form..

Say female because of the thick blue face patterns and thin orange at the tail.. Im no GT expert though.

yeah fishes with stomach like that make me wanna feed them so bad. It looks healthy though. lfs dont feed too much because it's more maintenance. Expect that.

anyways. I think it's a beautiful GT.

thanks for the input. I don't really know much when it come to sexing these but right now I am definitely kicking myself for not trying to vent this one before I put it in my tank.

u think it looks like a male huh lol

by it looking like that I think there's a small chance it can be a male. It's just my opinion I think it's a fm. That's not a fact.

The sunken in belly is likely caused by internal parasites

+1 Female...based on thin orange pattern on tail.

Well damn I was really hoping for a male ha ha. I guess I will just have to find this one a nice mate now. Any suggestions for what to use for the possible internal parasites?

mm...picking up random fish and dumping them in to your tank is never a good Idea...quarantine is always the way to go..watch for its poo if its stringy and white that lovely fish just introduced some parasites to your tank.

I QT every fish that comes in to my house for a minimum for 4 weeks..

great pick up and lovely fish...and best wishes.

The fish in the pic can either be a male or female, and the sunken belly doesn't help because a healthy female should have a rounder belly. There is no external markers to sex GT as in Dampsey so sexing is never easy. I raised hundreds of GT from fry to maturity, and still have difficulty sexing until the fish are 4 to 5 inch size. At that size, the male will have slighlty longer fins, a steeper forehead, and brighter in color, while the females are plumer and duller in color. But the clues are not of much use to novice unless you can compare the fish side by side.

check out my favorite GT on youtube and anywhere else. Compare with the 2 females and with your's
