forgive me if this is a noob question, or whatever

ive been doing alot of research on piranahs
i really want to get a couple

one thing ive been wonderinbg about is how mean are they to humans
how hard is it to clean a piranah tank, can you easily put your hands in there to clean the glass, gravel, deco...etc...

i meen, most of the times you cant avoid puttting your hands in a fish tank

also

this is the setup im planning on using,

i only want like 3 babies (rb)
i have a 55 gallon
i have an xp3 canister filter (350 GPH)
and an Jebo 828 Odyssea CFS 4 (317 GPH)
im not sure which one ill use for this tank
i have two power heads rated for a 75 gallon tank that i will use to create a current

i have all the other basic stuff, heater, gravel, lighting...etc...

i also hear i need blackwater extract too:confused:

any comments are appreciated

Over the years I have had quite an array of predatory tropical fish and I must say the red bellied piranha was one of the ones I was most happy to put my hand in the tank with. Blacks are a bit different but if you are going for red belled not a problem. Multiple Piranhas can live together in a tank if they are all introduced at the same time. Piranha are naturally schooling fish, but if they are raised in a tank alone they will eat any Piranha you introduce later. Tank size Piranhas require about 15 gallons each when fully grown. What is blackwater extract? I never used it with my ones and had them for years but would be interested to know what it is. Quite a good book (it’s old but will help you out) is Piranhas fact and fiction by John R Quinn or one of the hundreds of sites dedicated to them. A xp3 will do the job fine Hope this helps:thumbsup:

You don't need blackwater extract but they do prefer dim lights. Dim lights aren't required but may help the skittish behavior of RBP when they are young.

Agreed. You don't need black water. RBP's are skittish fish. And i housed 6 rbps in a 55g. It's not that hard to clean the tank Now for the light, some would say, dim your light. but i didn't dimeed my light. And they were fine.

3 RBPs would be OK in a 55 for life. A 75 would be much better IMO. For filtration, use both! Dont be too afraid of putting your hand in the tank. There have been cases of cornered fish biting so watch out for that. Dont dim your lights. They will get use to the bright lights and it would look better for you anyway. Ps are very hardy fish so black water extract (baisically a peat extract to raise the acidity and soften the water) is not totally needed.

They are not aggresive to humans (in general). I had a 150 gallon with 9 medium sized caribe and i was shoulder deep in it every weekend.

thanks for your input guys

im looking forward to getting some RB's :woot:

im just waiting for my tank to completly cycle

it seems to be taking longer then prievious tanks, oh well

As said, blkwater not required but some like it for different reasons:

1. PH preference

2. Darker water can make fish feel more secure. Since Ps are often shy and/or skittish the extract idea isn't a bad one but again, not required to have healthy fish.

3. Fish will likely exhibit nicer color but of course, the water will be tea-like.

Decisions, decisions! Good luck!
