now this is what a forum needs, a lessons learned category. we all know you get what you pay for and don't want to skimp on anything. anyway, i had this old 10gallon set up, which was given to me and since the heater worked i assumed that it was ok. until one day it malfunctioned and fried my indo dat. like tanks, the royal and gold nugget plec survived it. now that tank has an ebo jager, which is pretty much a magic wand. i try not to keep anything in there, and i know everyone's been through this, but sometimes you just need some temporary space.

I can see this applying to heaters...

but don't think that cheap filters like AquaClears are pieces of junk!

I have another one, let me know if you guys agree on this or not. Take note that this is a hard and fast rule and not carved in stone.

"Its better to match your fish to your water than match water to your fish"

Say for example you live in parts of So Cal where PH is as high as 8-9.. then it would be better to have a Frontosa Colony than keep Discus. Same thing applies if you live in an area where the PH is low.. it would be better to keep rays than have african cichlids.

Its Less stressful in the long run for you and for the fish.

Lesson i've learned...

DO NOT leave a protein skimmer running while your doing a 50% partial on a salt water tank (and then plug them back in)... because they burn up and then all the chemicals go into the water and kill about $400 worth of fish... Yeah... that really sucks.

And I really like the aquaclear filters for one reason and one reason only, and that if you have problems with ammonia or something like that, they are good ones to use to run the filtration media that you need. Other then that, I really dislike them. (personally I love the Magnum canaster filters =D)

Can you say OUCH!

with Aquaclears you really have to stay on top of keeping the filter media clean. They seem to clog up very fast and when they do, they overflow all over the place. I just bought 2 new Rena XP3's and love them. I like how they have the 2 options for the outlet and so far they have been running problem free & very efficient.
