I was just reading the thread yesterday from sbuse throwing in the towel because he can't keep Rectics. Others chimed in that they had bad experiences too. Rectics seem fine one day, dead for no apparent reason the next. I've had mine for six months now and he seems fine.
Has anyone had theirs for an extended period of time (years)?

I've kept one over a year, got him some ladies, and the poor source for my ladies sent tainted goods. All dead within a month.

I've got a buddy here in Iowa that just got into fishkeeping and he's had his for over a year......

QT is often overlooked. Would have saved mine I know.

Death happens. Most raykeepers will tell you some times it just happens.

There was a guy down in KC that had a big one, pretty sure that one had some age on it, was one of the bigger ones I've ever seen.....

I think you really have to be careful with them, try to find a quality source, and treat them for parasites. Then do serious QT with anything you might add to their tank. But there really doesn't seem to be that many people keeping them long-term successfully.

I hope you have yours for a good long time, because its just sad that these rays don't seem to do so well in captivity.

Which sucks because these are the cheapest and most readily available rays.

Theres your problem. The cheaper the ray, the less care they get during collection and shipping. If these things are only worth a couple dollars coming in, what loss is there for the exporter or wholesaler if a couple die on the way. This is exactly why most people here will recommend you just skip the damn retics and go with the motoros.

i had a retic for about 1 yr w no problems. i let it sit at my lfs for about 1 month b4 i bought it.

I'm an amateur at rays but I've had two retics for about a year now and they're doing great. The Discus that I've had for a month on the other hand...... One's great and the other has recently been slowly floating around near the top. It's all a crap shoot sorry to say, but I love retics and I think choosing a motoro over one is just a personal choice. Any ray you get is going to take alot of attention and time. Yes some breeds are harder than others, but so is the competency level of their owners.
