You guys keep victorian cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nope not a single member here ;-) But seriously there just aren't that many to keep. Sure you will see some Astatotilapia, Haplochromis, and Rock Kribs around. But well with the Nile perch killing off how many species now... There just aren't that many cool species to pick from.

I've got astatotilipia latifaciatus...no pics...:)

Actually, there are still a wide variety of vics to choose from. It just depends what you are looking for in the fish. There could still be undescribed species out still existing there and some have probably never been discovered before but are extinct. Who knows.

True true... But lets say out of the 400 or so originally species not even 200 are still left. What I was saying is if you compare them to say Malawi, there are easily over twice the number of described species, and in my opinion much more readily available and arguably distinct. I mean heck just jump over to cichlid-forum and you can see how many people keep vics just by how few have been submitted. (And yes I realize that isn't all the fish that are in the lakes, if you want close to accurate lists hit the next links.)

Malawis
Tanganyikans
Victorians

I mean I had two victorian Flamebacks (Haplochromis) but that is all that I have ever picked up. Anyways I was basically just saying that the fish are good, but just not as available because of many factors.

Yes that is true. The availability of the vics compared to malawi and tanganyika aren't even comparable. They are even exporting wild vics just in recently. Thats the great part. More wild vics means that there will be newly introduced genes into the hobby. Its the 1st time in over 10 years. This will keep the vics gene pool clean and pure. Me and my brother keep vics and he is a Victorian enthusiast. We kept the Pundamilia crimson tide, the nyererei both the ruti island and the python island, and the Haplochromis ruby green. Soon to get more in the future.

i tried kribs once with no luck. i dont kill fish so that kinda let me down. dont know what i did wrong.
