hey all

just bought myself a young arowana, i have him separated from my 55 tank right now with 2 iridesc. sharks, all is well so far, but i would just like to know any suggestions as far as feeding goes. i would like to grow him out as quick as possible so i can take the divider down so he can go with the rest of the tank mates (jack dempsy, chocolate cichlids, blue acara, etc etc)

problems being...

do not have money to buy new food.

i have frozen mysis and krill, silversides, bloodworms, plant matter foods, cichlid pellets you know all that. however i have heard as youngins they love to take live, and only live. some wont even take carnivore pellets i hear.

this is all just speculation however, and myself just looking out for the little guy. i have had him a total of about 12 hours now haha and i only want the best.

so any suggestions for feeding this kid??????
any suggestions for ANYTHING, even care, all is welcome here.

thank you all so much-

kevin

It depends on how big he is. If he's over 6" or so, the frozen stuff should work fine, and maybe even the pellets. If you want him to grow quickly, I recommend beefheart and crickets.

What type of aro is it, how big? You don't have money for food? I hope you realize the aro will outgrow a 55g in just a few months at best.

If you don't have the money for food for a baby arowana how are you going to be able to afford to feed a 36"+ adult arowana which brings up the most important question how are you going to afford a tank big enough for an adult Arowana? Your going to need a tank thats at least 250G MINIMUM. Research your fish before you buy. Don't impulse buy. A descent LFS should have told you all this already.

i think i may have left a few things out

first things first, im in the middle of two jobs right now,get paid next week. i work at two aquatics stores. i have A LOT of food to feed him, just at the moment i do not have the money for live. and as for the tank goes, im raising him in the 55g and then getting a larger tank, hopefully a 350 or so in about 2 months time.

he is a baby silver aro. about 3 in, was not an impulse buy. and id prefer a bag of 25 small crickets at my store for 1$ over 25 shrimp for 5$ any day.

thanks for that heads up guys

sod the live get him on the cichlid pellet then add frozen prawns to his diet too.. keep his color nice and rich and him growing well, not to mention not to hard on the pocket!

At 3" the best foods for your silver is freeze dryed blood worms, quality flake food and baby crickets. Good to see you have plans for a larger tank. Expect that you aro will be 12" with in 5-6 months, could be a little sooner or longer, and definetly in need of the larger tank.

Ok that sounds better. Sorry for the rant in the first post. I've found out that Aro's are real picky at times. It seems each week my Aro likes a different food, one week its Hikari Carnivore pellets, then blood worms, then Plankton and Krill, then flake then back to a different food and so on. Luckily I drop all that in my tank in one feeding in small amounts for all the fish in my tank. Two foods I've found out they never shy away from are live foods like guppies and pinhead crickets. Try dropping a little bit of each thing. I'm going to go out next weekend and buy another 10G tank with a screen lid on it and go buy about 40 pinhead crickets and add food and water to have an unlimited supply. It will be much cheaper and easier in the long run to have your own live food supply on hand. Feeders like guppies and fathead minnows as you'll hear about quite a bit are better if you quarantine in a treated tank for at least a week to keep from contaminating your main tank. Young silvers are also a favorite target for other fish to pick on so your going to need to keep him separated for a while making the need for that Large tank a priority not so much for him but the other fish so you can use the full 55G to grow him out to at least 8"-12". Have fun with the silver and keep us updated.
