Anyone got any insight as to the specific reasons young blacks have a high mortality rate? Is it something environmental, dietary or just genetics? Since silvers are nearly identical fish and are much hardier when younger, it would seem to me that it would almost have to be genetic, in which case it would happen in the wild also. However, I have nothing to back that up.

they are real sensitive of sudden water changes like temp ph hardness etc

I used to get them from egg sac up to about 6 inches and they would just stup eating. I was told years ago on another board that they were getting something in their diets in the wild that we weren't providing in the aquarium to get them started in life.

although blacks have allways been said to be sensitive ( and in fact a lot of them died ), the toughness of silvers at their young age is a myth. All aro's are extremely weak at young age.

yeah i think its more in the care taker, rather then the fish its self. all aros are sensitive and prone to death at a young age.

which is why WE at MFK recommend any new aro keeper to get something large enough atleast almost 1ft long so u will have a healthy aro n all u would need to do is feed it lol

I agree with ethnics here, raising all aros from a small size should only be atempted by experienced aquarists. There have been a dozen threads posted of small aros dying over the past few months.
