Was curious if anyone else had JD's that were like this when young. When I first got the little guy he was darker on the bottom half a bit with a yellow top half. But as he's been growing he hasn't been getting any spangles like I thought he would be getting but rather the black has become darker and darker. Definitely a good looking guy, just was wondering if anyone ever had a really dark young JD and if he grew out of it and ended up with some good spangling.

my buddy had one like that, i think it was black due to stress. after he re arranged the stocking the dempsey started growing and the spangles came out

Doubt it's stress as he doesn't act like a stressed cichlid would.

My substrate is black sand - which I know for some fish makes them darken up.

I had a couple like that but they eventually lightened up and I have seen them like that in stores I do not know if it is in fact from stress.

He wasn't cooperating last night and all I have is my camera phone so, bad pictures are bad but you can see his coloration.

This is when I first got him.

And these are from last night - again, sorry for the quality and I know I need to clean the glass.
