So these carpintis escondido I got from ken a few weeks ago have been growing fabulously. The oldest one is now about 2.5" almost 3" and has some serious mass on her already. Assuming it's a female as there is a faint black blotch/spot on her dorsal. The second largest carpintis coming up has some incredible coloring already and appears to be male with no blotches so maybe I can get a pair out of these two.. the other two escondido are still a bit smaller but growing well also.

That bit out of the way, my big bad female seems to have taken to having the need for fresh meat in her diet. She has killed 2 danios in the last 3 nights so far by stripping them of their tail fins then letting them tire during the day then making the final assault at night. I woke this morning and turned the light on to find her feasting on the danio she had taken out. These guys had been around for about 4 months now so I was kinda upset because they had definitely gotten some personality to them and had some neat markings. I got over that real quick though when i saw the set of chompers this female has developed. They weren't noticeable at all 2 days ago but this morning you can definitely see a row of mini razors on the bottom jaw. Absolutely cool I said to myself.

I feed these guys on a pretty frequent schedule. Hikari gold sinking mini pellets in the morning, crushed flakes in the afternoon, sinking mini pellets again towards late afternoon, and frozen bloodworms in the late evening, so these guys are definitely not lacking in diet. I stick in large cucumber slices 3-4 times a week as well, primarily for the plecos but see the carpintis on it from time to time as well.

Is it normal for these guys to want live fish in their diet?

They are grazers and opportunistic piscivores. They are not skilled predators in the same sense as guapotes and bass etc. That explains why she did not take them whole or eat them all at once.

Good info, thanks. These were two more colorful danios and there are several regular danios in there with them. Only the colorful danios seem to have been targeted/killed. Could that be because their color drew attention to them? I was under the impression carpintis kocked out during the evening hours. Got a lot to learn I guess.

One thing I thought was cool, was after the danio as finally killed she allowed the otehr carpintis to eat it with her but any other fish that came near it to snag a bite was chased off by her.
