Hi all, sorry to post another question thread...

I recently bought a true festae, which is about 1-1.5, he is currently in a 15 gallon tank - doing very well I might add...

I am aware that the 15 gallon is much too small for him, this was a temporary home for him as I recently purchased a 125 gallon tank :-) My 125 is up and running with a pair of convicts, I will be doing water changes frequently as needed to cycle the tank and have the fish live. One of the convicts is about 3" long, while the other is about 2.25". There aren't so many hiding places in the tank...which I foresee as a problem for my next question: Could I put my Festae in the 125 with the pair of convicts, and have him live? I know there is an absolute superfluous amount of room for these three fish.... but I'm still concerned.

I have only about 3 decorations in the ENTIRE tank... temporary, but still. I have a large plant, a stone house and a pot on its side... positioned on the left, middle, and right hand side respectively.

Crazy Mike, at what size would it be alright for me to place my festae in the tank?

I saw dividers at my lfs that I can buy, would it be alright for me to section off the tank for my festae until he is large enough?

That could work. First off I would get a lot more decorations to allow for territories to form a break line of sight. Then let the festae hit close to 4 inches then I would try it keep a divider handy

I would just get a secure divider. That way you have only one tank running and eventually, the Festae will outgrow the Convicts. When the Festae does get 2-3 inches larger than the convicts, then you can try removing the divider.

May be off topic bit just throw two bottles of safestart instead of waiting for the new tank to cycle

Convict pairs can and will kill just about anything. Even if your Festae gets big enough to hold it's own -he'll be stressed constantly until he manages to kill one or dies trying. Normally with enough caves and what not you'd be fine but we're talking about convicts here. I wouldn't be surprised if they hop the divider. My convict Barry Sanders can jump out of the water- backwards. I usually have to drain the entire tank to get him out.

If its a Male Festae, he will likely eat the Convicts whole when he reaches his growth potentiality. A large Male Festae will destroy just about anything 6" and under. Also, after giving this concept some rethinking, I would have to agree with FriedFlowerHornFillet. The Festae will be stressed to the max even in a 6' tank. I wouldn't risk the Festae's well-being over some Convicts. I wouldn't try unless the Festae was already at a decent size like 7" or up.

Even if your Festae is a foot long. I would still try to find smaller less scrappy fish to feed to it. Why lose scales over lunch?- Also I've seen "feeders" turn into fathers . Ever seen a Convii? If a lone convict feeder can survive for months in a tank with Doviis long enough to mature and fertilize their eggs on the sly- it's safe to say an established pair would not make a hospitable neighborhood for a red terror.
