I have a young Jar about 5 inches. I have had him about 3 weeks. He looks very healthy and is eating well. My question is this-he never really swims. He just sits on the bottom of the tank all day. When I turn off the light then he becomes very active but always returns to the same spot at the bottom. He is in the tank by himself so he shouldn't be protecting his turf or anything like that. I just have never seen this behavior from an aro. I've have been keeping silvers for 7 years and am always captivated by aro's when I see them. I just am wondering if this is natural for Jardini's because this is my first Jar. Thanks for any help with this.

I don't keep jars but my silver will sit on the bottom after a good feeding.

Is your tank aquascaped? Give him some places to hide, add some fake plants. Also some floating plants may help. Go grab some cheap schooling fish this will also help make him more feel secure.

let him get used to your tank ;)

Three weeks and he's still doing that? My jar was pasing the minute I dropped him in and only hides when my hands are in the tank doing water changes... I just had a problem with an Oscar bashing him/her and s/he still never hid... just did it's best to swim away... I would check all your water params... Was your tank completely cycled when you brought him/her in? Also floating plants really help make an aro secure... good luck and let us know how it goes! We love pics too :)

How big is the tank? They can be very nervous put some plants in there like vallis to make it feel more secure. alot of ones that ive kept have done that before theres nothing wrong theyr'e just nervous.

yes, the tank was completely cycled. it has been up for a year. he is in 30 long for now. he will be in a 125 in the near future. right now i have juve' silver aro's in there but that will be his home for a while anyway.

Mine likes to chill on the bottom also. He swims when he has to get some food or chase the cichlid or catfish. As they get bigger, they become more bold and less wary. See the pics in my post. He is swimming now and came and ate 1 shrimp and 2 scallops.
