Young nastie. Male or female

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Females also get a very prominent forehead in haitiensus, especially if there is not a male in the tank, or if the male isn't alpha enough. Here is a shot of my female, when I removed the alpha male. She would lose black, and get a very alpha profile.

Wow!! She looks good :)

She is definitely the boss. Sounds like that is the reason for the Nuchal hump. And she is very interactive for a young fish. First time keeping haits, based on what I have read she will have to be separated very soon based on what I have read.

I found if they couldn't kill other species tank mates, they would die of stress.
They also need higher temps than most cichlids, I kept mine around 88'F.
If you find the article Dominican republic, Oh Island in the Sun, it talks about the high temps they are found in, in nature.

Have them at 85 now. They are the only species in the tank. 3 haits that equal about 7 total inches of fish in a 120. She is the only one that has a kok. At times there is no black on the dorsal fin. I put so many fake plants and caves in the tank it looks rediculous, in an attempt to reduce stress. Hope they can hang on, have lost a few in the last couple weeks.
