I bought my Motoro getting on 2 months ago now. He started swimming up an down the glass about 1 month ago. He's now starting to swim about without 'leaning' on anything (sand or side glass). He's getting on for about an 8 inch disk now and is in the process of growing a 2nd and loosing a stinger. My question is will he swim about more without the aid of glass or sand as he gets bigger as he looks awesome when he's in the middle of the water and I'd love to see more of it?

Would water flow or current in the tank have something with them swimming mid level? Usually looks like they are riding the current as opposed to swimming, just a thought?

My experience is that if there is alot of circulation, they will surfe more. My main tank(1200g) there is noone surfing, but the pups in the 55 gallon with an fx5 running it, is surfing all the time. 1200g has 4x, 55g has 10x. Maybe youths are more playfull too, just like in normal life ;)

I have a 180g with 2 x FX5 and 1 x Eheim 2260 which is around 8000lph Total and I hardly see any mid level swimming, loads of glass surfing though.
