This should be in the stupid tricks thread but i couldnt find one so here it is.. I have just started keeping natives, and know that quite a few live naturally in low PH water, so i fugure to make them happier, (my ph outta my well is 7.8), id lower it to 6.8, Well i bought some ph down, and evidently overdosed...Have you ever seen a fish do the Funky Chicken turn black and try to jump outta the tank all at one time :WHOA: ??? Thankfully i have several tanks close together so i quickly dipped the 3 out of one and put them in an unsabotaged tank and they chilled back out. Moral of this story...DONT DO THAT

good point, pH altering substances is no good for a tank and the long term happiness of its residents.

Use RO water and filter through peat if you want a safe way to keep the pH and hardness low. Isn't pH down phosphate based anyways?

do you by any chance know the ph of ro water??, not sure about the phosphate question, i figured it was like muriatic acid based, any way it will make a fish shoot thru the roof

5.4-5.8 depending on the hardness of the water in your area, that's what I get from 7.8 from the tap

lol u think thats bad...for my 21st my mum treated me to a new tank and spent £175 on fancy goldfish...a week later they get whitespot and my mums mate says "my sister swear by putting a bit of dettol in the tank and it cleanses then with antibacterial properties"
have you ever seen 60 goldfish die within an hour??? lol all i can do is laugh now.
my lodger very kindly flushed them all down the loo

At least your fish were sanitized. :)

yes there is that lol and i think how bad they were i probably did them a favour, put them out their misery quicker...foget clove oil use dettol

my friend had a small 3ft community tank and forgot to do the water change once and the water got really messy so when his mum saw the water was messy she went to the laundry to get the detergent and she started pouring it in the tank coz she thought it will clean the water and tank lmao....it was no surprise all the fish died afer like 20min
