So I rarely feed flake food, mainly just Hikari Pellets and about 10 types of Frozen Food, because I like everything to be as natural as possible. However, lately I've realized the importance of a truly balanced diet to bring out the best colour and keep the fish in good health, and I've seen that many flake foods offer this, or atleast a large part of it.

The dilemma: I only have one type of Flake food. A cheapy, rather sub-par Flake food that I feed to my "lesser" fish like Serpaes, Dwarf Gouramis and other "cheap" fish. I won't name names, but the container is blue with an Angelfish on it, and was mentioned in another thread. So I'm searching for a very high quality flake food so I can save some money on Frozen foods (I keep mainly smaller fish, but I go threw about 2 packs of various frozen foods a week!), while still maintaining good nutrition for my beloved fish. I've never shopped around for Flakes, so truly, I know nothing about what brands are supplying the good flakes. I know for Frozen foods, I swear by Hikari, same goes for pellets for my Cichlids. I'm not sure if it's the same for flakes.

Bottom line: Can someone suggest a very high quality flake food that could be substituted for Frozen foods (mostly meaty foods)? I've heard good word about Dainichi fish foods, but I've never personally tried them. Any opinions or comments are welcome. Feel free to throw in biased opinions, personal experiences, or even the diet of your own fish. I won't mind if the discussion gets abit off topic (although the Mods might! :D).

I use a ton of tetra pro crisps. I currently have 2 4lb. buckets of the stuff. I recently (thanks to Ewurm) started using Omega one super color flakes for my discus. The omega one flakes are very happily eaten by my discus.

Omegae One uses WHOLE SALMON as a base. Most use fish meal, which means leftovers. Heads, tails, organs, etc. Omega One is definitely my number one, and they have different varieties for different situations. If I had an Omega One Banner, I would wave it.

Omega One.

They're supposed to be coming out with a frozen line up soon.

I can't wait.

I too support Omega One. I haven't used their flakes, but their shrimp pellets list Whole salmon and whole cod as ingredients.

I always use HBH and Hikari when it comes to flakes. All you really hav to make your decision on is what is made from the flakes. Generally, the ingredients at the top are used in the highest percentage. This gives you a good indication on what you need.

I guess I am jumping on the Omega One train. I used to feed Omega One to my smaller fish and they always had amazing colors.

The ingredients list is listed based on the amount put in by weight. The first ingredient will aways be the majority of the food prior to cooking.
