Hey guys, I have 55gal and I'm looking to add some yoyos. My first questions are....is quarantine as necessary with the yoyos as opposed to the clowns? are they really that susceptible? if so, what temperature should i hold em at and for how long 2 weeks? 3 weeks? and if needed, salt content? finally how many would be a good addition, I've got plenty of room and will eventually be in a bigger tank so i was thinking 4 or 5?

Thanks guys
-Dan

Hi Dan,

No need to add salt. Have it in your cabinet though just in case. Yoyo loaches are not as vulnerable as clowns but you still need to quarantine for at least 3-4 weeks to be sure. Keep temperature to 80-82 degrees and keep water well aerated. There are parasites they may carry that take weeks to pop out.

A 55g can handle 6-8 of them.:)

Did you get the loaches? I recommend treating with Levamisole HCL during the quarantine period. Camallanus nematodes can take up to 8 weeks to become evident, and by that time, it could already be too late for some of your fish. I didn't recognize them in my tank until my live bearers started bloating/wasting and ultimately dying off. Two weeks later is when the tale-tell "red threads" started protruding from their vents. I did quarantine for 30 days, everything seemed fine, but it most definitely was not. I had to treat all of my tanks since I use the same siphons and nets for all of my display tanks. The loaches never did have any red worms coming from their vents, but they did get bloated, and after treatment, the bloating went away. I saw the thread-like worms protruding from both angelfish and livebearers (guppies and P. metallica.)

I did get them actually! I only wanted 5 or 6 and the guy sold me a bag saying there were 8 and he'd only charge me for 6 so he didn't have to unbag them from the truck so I said fine! Got home and counted 15 -_- lol

Laticauda thank you for the information and I'm so sorry to hear about it! was everyone okay after the treatment? I've had the loaches in quarantine with a Blue Phantom for two and a half weeks now :) everyone seems to be healthy, no marks, everyone is active and eats fine. but im going to wait a little longer before I bring them into my main tank not only because of the worms but because they are small and I dont want them to be a night time snack for the black ghost =X lol. I will buy the Levamisole HCL just to play it safe! thanks again!

Yes, the treatment worked for the fish that I was able to treat. One yoyo passed shortly after I got them, and at first I chalked it up to "failure to thrive" but soon learned the true culprit. It took almost 3 months for the worms to show the tell-tail signs in the angelfish and livebearers. I've read they can remain undetected up to six months after initial infection! They can lay dormant for a LONG time, and that's why I recommended treatment. Well, two treatments, three weeks apart, to catch any possible remaining in the life-cycle. When you get your Levamisole, let me know and I can tell you how I treated my tanks, and at what concentration.

There is some information online, but I was only able to find the info for 100% Levamisole HCL, but the stuff I got from the pigeon supply was only 5% or 7%, I'd have to check the bottle again to be certain.
