Zebra Breeding Size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
research venting on african cichlids... it should give you how to sex... size is difficult could be 3-4 inches... heard smaller and heard of larger too... just what I have heard...

I've had zebras produce fry when they were about 2.5".

Regarding gender determination, specifically what type of zebras are you inquiring about and what size are they?

Some zebra species are dimorphic so gender is readily apparent...depending on how mature the fish is. For example the female counterpart to the zebra in my avatar look nothing like the male.

females can be aggressive as well. Near let aggression be your deciding factor... again as said earlier you can look up each type and determine what they are by color for some... of course if you bought them at an LFS and they are far down the generation scale or inbreeding, it can be difficult to tell by that... Now if you research venting you will find that it is the best way to determine the sex for cichlids. It require some practice and some time. Find a fish that you already know the sex of and practice on that one. Then after that start flipping and sexing... good luck:naughty:

i read on the internet that egg spots are another way to tell. males have mopre females have less. is this a reliable way to sex the zebras? does anyone have any pictures of males or females i can use to discern maybe ones where i can practice the venting technique

egg spots can be on either or have none at all. have you researched venting yet? If not it will have some drawings you can look at... only way to learn to vent is to try... trust me it takes time... some times its good to make friends with someone at your LFS to help you learn by letting you vent theirs and ask if you are right...

Eggspots aren't an indicator of gender, here's one of my mouthbrooding red zebra females with a bunch of eggspots:

Matured males are typically lighter in color, with more blue pigmentation in their dorsal fins. Additionally, their fin tips are pointed as opposed the the rounded fin tips of the females. Here are a couple of male red zebras:

Post some pics of the fish you're inquiring about.

By the way, the snow white socolofi you have isn't a zebra.
