my zebra typically has deep vibrant colors but sometimes he becomes almost transparant and loses most of these colors... only for them to return later on ....

does this just happen when he's scared or nervous or is it something else?

Victorian cichlids such as your
zebra obliquidens are known to go through drastic color changes depending on their mood. Whether they are stressed, dominant, or etc, they will always go into different colors phases. This is very normal for them so don't worry a bit.

Our male Hap 44 is the like that. Depends if he is chasing or being chased as to what he looks like.

Because of this .... they are almost my favorite africans....... intense...
