whats a good price for a zebra pleco? im wanting one bad. but not bad enough to pay to much. stores around here can be crazy...
l-200 at one for 25 bucks then at another it will be 50 for the same size.

What do you mean by zebra pleco? I think you wrote "l-200," which is Hemiancistrus subviridis or green phantom pleco. Guessing from the price you mentioned, I think you're referring to a false or Colombian zebra pleco (L-199). Sounds like $25 is a good price, based on what price is asked at "that pet place" (see below link), at $40.

But price can be based on other variables, such as size. Also, maybe the LFS that costs more has the fish go through a quarrantine period so they can guarantee that it's healthy. Why spend $25 for a fish that is sick, has parasites and may die shortly? In that case, the $50 may be worth what the LFS is asking (or maybe they want a higher profit).

I think he is refering to the price of the L-200 at his LFS's in the area.
A small 1" zebra pleco can go from $100(if you're in good with someone) all the way up to $200 or higher. They're really rare and the demand for them are high so that is why you get the high price.
Best chance is to find a breeder in your area, not a LFS.

"The" zebra pleco (or imperial zebra pleco), Hypancistrus zebra, is L-46, not L-200 (which is again a green phantom).

L-46 (and relations) are at least, as Austinchap wrote, $100, if not more.

Why do you not get that he is using it as an example.
OP you should of never mentioned the L-200. Not too many people seem to know how to read your post correctly:screwy: even though I get what you are getting at:D.

I think that Linus is rightly hinting at the use of common names. 'Zebra pleco' basically meaning black and white and stripey could be suitable for loads of plecs.

Apologies- I did not interpret your statement that you're using L-200 as an example.

To see the variation in costs for a "zebra" pleco, type in "zebra" under the category of pleco on: aquabid.com

You'll see the cost will vary if you're referring to an "imperial" zebra (L-46) at $190, "chocolate zebra" (L-270) for $100, $20 each for an "Orinoco" zebra (L-199) and $25 for a "Colombian" zebra (L-129). For the same L-number, of course price can vary for size, sex, etc.

If you are lucky enough to live in California, every now and then at COAST in LA and PCCA in San Jose, the great breeder C.M brings in L46 zebra fry.
they have gone for the $30 to 50 range for about 3/4 inch.
A few months ago Saul, also in LA was selling 2 inchers for $100, he had about 400 of them.
so it depends on area, age, size, sex.

I doubt zebra's are being sold in store.. unless its certain ones that are willing to pay top dollars for it...

I've only saw them once in person... they are nice just too overpriced...

But ya.. I've ran into several stores where they label their pleco zebra spotted or zebra pleco.. which all turns out to be either flash, leopard pleco or king tigers..
