Zebra Shark Parthenogenesis!

Interesting wording... 'Fourth year in a row', almost to imply sharks only lay eggs once a year.
"Never had access to a male" also suggests she was captive bred.

These seem to be popping up more and more. Wonder if this one will actually be confirmed or shot down due to poor record keeping.

well if she was captive bred than that would lead me to believe in parthenogenesis, but if she wasn't (i'm sure zoodiver can confim this) it has been recorded that female sharks can hold sperm for years before actually using it

Very interesting indeed......even if she did keep sperm for years why wouldn't there be a even male/female offspring?

Interesting indeed and might I add,my dream fish of all dream fish.

Offspring isn't always equally divided male/female.
The thing that makes me wonder is that Dubai is a fairly new aquarium in the grand scheme of things, so they'd be getting animals from the wild or from other places. That animal wasn't raised there, that's for sure.

it could be pathenogenesis. I know a zebra shark housed in the zoological garden in dresden(germany). She was captive bred and lived alone in her tank. She layed unfertile eggs for years. And suddenly three fertile eggs. All 3 hatchlings were females, so it was parthenogenesis for sure.

thats cool about the one in germany
