Does anyone (hopefully educated in the subject) know if Zeolite would work as a biomedium? I found a product made for sand filters that is 100% Zeolite. They are claiming the Zeolit sand has 100 times the surface area of silica sand. Also claiming that it gives a D.E. filter type clarity. Hopefully someone here will be able to answer my question.

Thanks in advance

i'm far from an expert but i think the pores are way too small to hold beneficial bacteria. the pores are tiny, on a molecular level. it's usually used in aquariums to trap ammonia, which i think would starve the BB already in the system.

it will probably make your water crystal clear but i wouldn't count on it for biological filtration. my $.02

I have 100 lbs of zeolite stones that I use for newly import koi in my holding tank to remove ammonia. It can be recharge by soaking it in salt water. It leave a very messy powder so I'm wondering how this would improve water clarity. Maybe it has a negative charge to attract particles????
Only problem is you cannot use salt in your tank with the zeolite in it. It will obviuosly release the ammonia back into the tank. Once in powder form there is no way or very difficult of removing it from the tank. If the zeolite is fully saturated, it takes very little salt to cause an ammonia spike. Even a water change can trigger the release.
