Oh they still look the part tho...i'd really like one i have a 180 gal with a 6" Silver Aro and a 8" Fire Eel which type of gar would be more sutable florida, aligator or spotted gar ?
Not the alligator gar, spotteds and floridas get to around 2' max I think.

So would you say a spotted or florida is my best bet ? You did mean 2feet in size didn't you ?

Spotted and Fl Gars stay smaller yes but not 2ft. They usually grow to 30-36"

spotted or florida gars would be your best choice for home aquaria either can reach 24'' but the tank should be 30-36inches wide Gars need a large turning radius as their scalation makes their body more rigid than many fish-Anne

LOL, I was about to post that pic. Actually I think the first two pics are tropicals, they were in an article about them on garfishing.com . Either way, those gars were caught in Central America, but they think that there may be an isolated population of Alligator gars there in addition to tropicals.
EDIT: Just took a closer look at the first pic, and it's a tropical for sure... I can see the characteristic "trident" on the top of it's head. The best suited gar for "smaller" (but still very large) tanks would be the Shortnose, in captivity they'll only hit about 2'. Floridas and spotteds can get to 30" or 36" as The TRUST said.
Here ya go...

amazing animals, hopefully some of those made it back to the pond.
Me too, I really hate seeing amazing animals like this being killed. :( The 'gator gar in the two pics that I posted was released, though... I was talking to the guy that caught it. :)
There was an alligator gar fishing article in a recent F&S mag. It said alligator gar populations are really going down. It said many ppl think of them as pests and will kill them if possible. Some ppl will shoot them if they see them come to the surface! I think that was about all gar not just alligator... :(

Yeah, they're considered trash fish, and morons nation-wide kill them off. Such a shame... :(
